Objectives£ºThe objectives of this study we are to determine the effects of the temperaments and characters of male alcoholdependent patients on relapse or abstinence after detoxification on admission and discharge and to establish preventive and therapeutic interventions for relapse.
Methods£ºThis study included 72 male patients who were diagnosed as alcohol dependent according to the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria. All the subjects completed the questionnaires for demographic data, alcohol consumption history and Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). The patients were followed up until 12 weeks after discharge with regard to resuming alcohol consumption.
Results£ºThe patients were divided into 2 groups on the basis of the results obtained on follow up£ºrelapse group [50 patients (69.4%)] and abstinent group [22 patients (30.6%)]. The patients in the abstinent group had significantly higher persistence (P) and self-directedness and cooperativeness (SC) scores than did the patients in the relapse group. The length of time until alcohol consumption was resumed was significantly greater for those with scores for the P
and greater trend for those with scores SC.
Conclusion£ºHigher P and SC scores on the TCI personality scales indicate a better prognosis. Therefore, preventive and therapeutic interventions based on this should be established.
